Here is a two page list of proven supplements everyone over the age of 40 should be taking. You can Xerox this, and hand it out to your friends if you like. Anyone over 40 should be taking about 18 supplements, plus whatever hormones they need (see the hormone articles such as Balance Your Hormones). That may seem like a lot, but every one of these will improve your health, well being, and longevity. Those under 40 only need eight supplements. Read the article Supplements for Younger People, and take All Your Minerals and Vitamins®, flax oil, beta glucan, acidophilus, vitamin D, vitamin E, and FOS. You can add glutamine and sulforaphane if you wish. Health is real wealth. Without good health you have nothing. Diet and lifestyle are everything. A wholesome low fat, high fiber diet of whole grains and natural foods is central. People are all too willing to shell out hundreds of dollars for toxic prescription drugs that just make their health worse, but balk at paying a hundred dollars a month for natural supplements and hormones to help them live longer and better. Instead of paying extortionate prices for an after-the-fact health “insurance” program, spend $100 a month on the following supplements. Here, an ounce of prevention is worth ten pounds of cure. *beta glucan 400 mg, or 800 mg for the first year if you have an illness. Eat small servings of oatmeal and barley, and you'll get huge amounts, and won't need a supplement.
*CoQ10 100 mg and no less; 200 mg for the first year if you have an illness, no ubiquinol !!! No "special delivery systems". CoQ10 is not found in your food.
*quercetin 100 mg; another powerful natural antioxidant. Only low amounts in foods.
*beta-sitosterol 300 mg of mixed sterols, or 600 mg for the first year if you have an illness. Only found in small amounts in green and yellow vegetables..
*soy isoflavones from drinking and cooking with soy milk. Otherwise buy a supplement.
*DIM 200 mg to lower estrogens in men and women; better and stronger than I3C. Only found in cruciferous vegetables. Read "Estrogens in Men and Women" article.
*flax oil 1,000 mg (or 1/4 tsp liquid); better than fish oil- must be refrigerated. Omega -3s are very deficient in our diets, and come mainly from seafood. If you eat seafood regularly, you don't need this.
*PS (phosphatidyl serine) 100 mg for better brain function. Only found in organ meats, dairy and soy foods. A vital one for brain and memory support. Most important.
*acidophilus 6 billion units or more mixed strains for better digestion- must be refrigerated. This is absolutely necessary for a healthy digestive system.
*FOS (fructooligosaccharides) 750 to 1,500 mg for better digestion. Only found in small amounts in our diets. Works synergistically with the acidophilus.
*L-glutamine 1,000 mg in the AM and 1,000 mg in the PM for better digestion. Little glutamine is found in common foods other than animal products. Bulk powder is more economical.
*glucosamine 500 to 1000 mg for good joint health. Not found in any foods. Read the Bone Health article.
*alpha lipoic acid 400 mg to maintain healthy blood sugar levels. Not found in food. If your fasting blood sugar is 85 or less, you don't need this.
*NAC (N-acetyl cysteine) 600 mg to raise your glutathione levels. Cysteine is found in food, but not NAC. NAC is a well proven supplement.
*vitamin E natural (not synthetic) mixed tocopherols 200 IU (or 400 IU every other day); classic antioxidant. Even in whole grains this only occurs in small amounts.
*vitamin D3- 400 (10 mcg) to 800 (20 mcg) IU (unless in the sun regularly) in addition to All Your Vitamins®, never more than 1,200 (30 mcg) IU total. Not in food- only from sun exposure. Do not overdose on this as it is a powerful oil-soluble hormone.
*All Your Minerals® one daily gives you 17 vital elements in the amounts you need We are all mineral deficient. This is the best mineral supplement on earth.
*All Your Vitamins® one daily gives you the RDA of all 13 vitamins and a special absorbable methyl cobalamin form of B-12.
*beta carotene 10,000 IU; a powerful antioxidant. The usual 25,000 IU doses are simply too much. Only found in dark leafy greens basically.
*sulforaphane 1,000 mcg. This has various and most dramatic benefits for our health. Read the Sulforaphone article in our library. This is a broccoli sprout extract.
L-carnosine is not for macrobiotics, vegetarians, or vegans.
ALC (acetyl-L-carnitine) is not for macrobiotics, vegans or vegetarians. This includes carnitine and propionyl-l-carnitine.
