CMO Won't Help Your Arthritis -Roger Mason

This column previously discussed the fact that chondroitin is useless in treating arthritis. God knows how many millions of dollars worth of chondroitin are sold each year. Drug stores, health food stores, Internet sites, and vitamin catalogs sell millions of bottles of chondroitin every year.

Recently several people have asked about "CMO" or cetyl myristoleate for the treatment of arthritis and rheumatism. It seems some unscrupulous promoters have been sending out mass mailings on this. In fact someone even wrote a pitiful book "Beat Arthritis Forever" extolling its benefits.

Folks, going back a full 30 years-three decades-in Chemical Abstracts to find every possible natural remedy for arthritis turned up no benefits for CMO. Going over countless thousands of references showed no validity here at all. Here is the CMO story...

In 1977 a man named Harry Diehl patented CMO for rheumatoid arthritis. It is a derivative of myristic acid from coconut oil. He injected the equivalent of 17 grams (over a half ounce) per human in rat experiments. Rats, not people.  Remember that anyone with $10,000 can pretty much patent anything they want to. Patents have no scientific validity whatsoever and merely convey property rights. Then CMO was pushed year after year with very limited success as people were simply not getting any results from using it. Taking 17 grams a day is economically impossible since the capsules usually contain 250 mg and cost about $25 a bottle. That's a bottle of 60 per day or $750 a month. You can't eat this- you have to inject it with a hypodermic needle.

Well, we didn't hear from old Harry until 17 years later where he somehow published his own study in the Journal of Pharmacy Science in 1994. He injected more rats the human equivalent of about 20 grams a day and claimed it healed their arthritis. We should emphasize  the fact that these poor rats were injected with CMO. How are you going to find USP pharmaceutical grade CMO and inject yourself with a whopping 17 grams every day? Get an elephant needle?  This is patently ridiculous.

In 2008  people are still buying and taking CMO. You'll find many health food stores, Internet sites, drug stores, and vitamin catalogs  actively selling it at high prices. If you want to know how to cure arthritis naturally please read Treating Bone & Joint Problems Naturally in our free library under “T”.  What does work, what does help you? Diet more than anything will help you. Diet is everything. Diet cures disease. Diet cures arthritis. Stop eating almost half your calories as fat. Stop eating over 160 pounds of sugars every year. Stop eating twice the calories you need. Lose weight. Stop eating refined foods without nutrition. Stop eating Nightshade foods (tomatoes, potatoes, eggplants, and peppers). Take a walk every day and get some exercise. Fast one day a week on water from dinner to dinner. These things will cure your arthritis.

What about supplements? There are no Magic Pills, just like there are no magic prescription drugs. Anyone who takes prescription drugs like Celebrex for their arthritis, pushed the self destruct button a long time ago. Glucosamine does have value, but only when it has vitamin and mineral "co-factors" to help it. Take All Your Minerals and Vitamins. Minerals are vital here. Take vitamins C, D, and E. Take 1-2 capsules of flax oil. Flax is a much better choice than fish oil.  If you are over 40, take all twenty recommened supplements for your total health and not just your arthritis. A good temporary exogenous herb to take for six months is boswellin extract 250 mg a day. Some people swear MSM helps them but this has no science at all behind it. Don't waste your time. Curcumin is a very effective temporary anti-inflammatory and 500 mg of actual curcumin is a good dose. Plain old Knox® Gelatin can be very helpful as this is merely hydrolyzed (broken down by boiling) collagen. These are all supplements that will help you.

Another thing you can do is balance your basic hormones. This has been discussed over and over in this column. You can get your doctor to do this expensively with blood draws, or you can do most of them  yourself with an inexpensive saliva kit. You just send your saliva to a laboratory for analysis of free, non-bound hormones. Test your DHEA and testosterone first. You can take melatonin, pregnenolone, and use progesterone cream. Yes, men should use progesterone as it is non-feminizing and balances dangerous estrogen levels. Do not take DHEA or testosterone without testing first to see if you need them. Go to
www.healthcheckusa.com and get thyroid panel 2 for $85 to test your free T3 and T4. Women should test their three estrogens. Hormones have much to do with inflammation, but your doctor doesn't have a clue about this nor does he care. There are quite a few studies on the effects of our hormones on arthritis, but these are simply ignored by the medical profession.

Literally 95% of Americans over the age of 65 will suffer from arthritis. Nearly everyone will end up crippled by joint inflammation. It took maybe 20 or 30 years for your arthritis to develop, and it isn't going to be cured in 30 days. It is much harder to cure arthritis than it is to cure cancer naturally. Rebuilding the joints can literally take years, and some people are too far gone to rebuild very much. This is a long term project so be patient.

Taking dangerous, toxic prescription drugs will just make you worse in the end. Do not take these poisons or you'll just end up with more inflammation than ever. Read Treating Arthtitis Naturally in our library.  DIET, supplements, natural hormones, fasting, safe exercise, no prescription drugs,  and limit any bad habits will cure your bone and joint problems naturally.
