How NOT to Treat and Prevent Prostate Cancer
- Roger Mason
Our old friend Robert Willix is at it again in his newsletter "Health &
Longevity". His first problem is that he thinks the PSA (prostate specific
antigen) is a reliable and accurate test for prostate cancer. The PSA test
beats nothing certainly but has been shown repeatedly to not be reliable
as too many factors can influence it. Any kind of prostate infection can
send your PSA level up severely for example.
He then recommends a bone scan to see if the cancer has metastasized.
We're talking ionizing radiation here? The last thing in the world cancer
needs is radiation. Always avoid X-rays whenever you possibly can.
He goes on to suggest aerobic exercise. Exercise is great and we all
should exercise but all the studies show repeatedly couch potatoes get no
more prostate cancer than professional athletes. He also recommends yoga
but doesn't explain how yoga is going to help you. If you want to relax
and loosen up by using yoga that is great but why try and tell you this
heals disease?
I couldn't agree more that people should not smoke, drink or use coffee
but studies have never shown smokers, drunks and coffee addicts to have
one whit more prostate cancer than anyone else. As a matter of fact,
alcoholics have smaller prostates generally than teetotalers.
To his credit he says to eliminate all animal protein as much as possible.
But protein is not the problem- it is animal FAT. It is clear that FAT is
the problem and not protein.
Now he goes on to tell you lycopene is a great thing for your prostate. I
have preached until I'm tired that lycopene is a promotion of a major
ketchup company without any value for your prostate. Studies involving
over 32,000 men proved beyond any doubt that actual blood serum levels of
lycopene were unrelated to prostate disease in any way, shape or form. See
JNCI 82 (1990) and Cancer Epidem. Bio. Prev.6 (1997) for these two
studies. He goes on to recommend wheat grass juice. Why? What proof is
there that wheat grass juice has anything to do with the subject? To his
credit he says to drink green tea but why not take the convenient capsules
since no one I know is going to drink 4-5 cups of green tea regularly. And
why not warn people to get the decaf varieties? Then he says to drink "essiac
tea". This stuff has been around as a "cancer cure" for decades now
without one clinical study to back it up.
To his credit he says to take beta carotene but recommends an unnecessary
50,000 IU when 25,000 is all you need. He really steps on his own feet
telling you to take 15,000 mg of vitamin C a day. You need a mere 60 mg of
this, so that is twenty-five times what you need or 2,500% overdose.
Fifteen grams (that is 60 X 250 mg tablets) will acidify your normally
alkaline blood and ruin your immune system while unbalancing your body and
causing long term side effects. Can you imagine taking a whole bottle of
sixty 250 mg vitamin C tablets a day or 365 bottles a year? He goes on to
his credit to use 400 mg of CoQ10 but neglects to tell you this will run
you over $100 a month. I've found 100 mg to work very well over the long
term.
Now he quits stepping on his feet long enough to stick them in his mouth
when he tells you to take saw palmetto and pygeum. This column has
repeatedly explained why these two very popular and well advertised herbs
are useless. The active ingredient they contain is, in fact, beta-sitosterol.
In Europe these extracts are standardized for beta-sitosterol content and
this is stated clearly on the front of the package. They are very
expensive. Beta-sitosterol from soybean, sugar cane pulp and pine oil are
much more powerful and less expensive. Saw palmetto and pygeum contain a
mere 1 part in 2,000 of beta-sitosterol complex or one twentieth of one
per cent. You would have to literally eat pounds of saw palmetto or pygeum
to get the 300 mg you find in several brands of beta-sitosterol. Surf the
Internet for "beta-sitosterol" and find a good brand. Now he says to take
PC-SPES. This column has warned repeatedly that this Chinese herbal
mixture of eight common herbs not only does not help prostate cancer but
has serious side effects like vein thrombosis and gynecosmastia (male
breast growth). It is totally overpriced and the so-called "studies"
merely show it lowers the PSA level. The cancer rages on but the PSA is
artificially lowered which has no meaning and no longer indicates the
growth of the malignancy.
He then wants you to take shark cartilage. Folks, there is another useless
promotion. Shark cartilage is more promotional b.s.and there just aren't
any clinical studies to verify any value at all. Now he wants you to take
milk colostrum. I have found this to be a promotion from the milk
producers who wanted to make some more money selling milk products. I
cannot find any valid studies to show any use for colostrum. By the way,
this is the fluid secreted by cows after they give birth for the first
week for their calves.
He does recommend beta glucan but does not recommend a dose. 200 mg is a
good dose and men with cancer can use 400 mg for six months. He also
recommends MGN-3 but does not give a dose. Future columns will expose
MGN-3. Now he wants you to inject high doses of vitamin C into your body
as if the bottle a day regimen isn't enough to ruin your health.
Great advice Robert. You're a real prince.
No mention of FAT as the single biggest cause of prostate disease. No
mention of ESTROGEN as the biggest hormonal cause of it. No mention of
using powerful OTC hormones like melatonin, DHEA, pregnenolone,
progesterone and androstenedione (or prescription testosterone) since
prostate cancer is a HORMONALLY caused and controlled illness. No mention
of beta-sitosterol which is the most powerful supplement known to science
for treating prostate disease and supporting good prostate health. No
mention of zinc or selenium. No mention of curcumin. No mention of garlic
extract or vitamin E. No mention of DIM (twice as strong as
indole-3-carbinol) to lower estrogen levels. No mention of citrus pectin
(no, not the "modified"), flax oil, soy isoflavones, quercitin, N-acetyl
cysteine, vitamin D, or milk thistle. ALL of these powerful supplements
have been shown in published international clinical studies to support
good prostate health.
And no discussion of diet and eating whole grains like brown rice,
oatmeal, whole grain bread and whole wheat pasta as your basic food. No
discussion of never drinking milk or using dairy products again and their
connection to prostate disease.
