Atkins Declares Bankruptcy in August 2005
- Roger
Mason
Robert Atkins fell over dead last year at only 72 years of
age from chronic heart disease by following his own deadly advice. His books on
diet were record breaking best sellers. Atkins Nutritionals Inc. of NY declared
bankruptcy on August 1, 2005 after losing $340 million in 2004. They currently
OWE over $300 million in interest and principal. Folks, that’s close to a
billion dollars down the toilet. They made a futile, final, and very expensive
last gasp attempt at the huge Natural Products Expo West show this March in
Anaheim. The crowds ignored them. You see Atkins products and low carb products
in the “dollar stores” and distress liquidation merchandise stores (Big Lots,
etc.) now because people were getting sick by hogging down all that grease, fat,
meat, pork chops, butter, eggs and dairy foods, as well as that horrible
chemical aberration sucralose.
This column for years exposed the insanity of this Guaranteed Road to Cancer and
predicted they would go broke this year, as they were failing badly last year.
While they are almost a third of a billion dollars in debt, his widow Veronica,
age 57, is reported to be worth about $500 million dollars! She’s a
Russian immigrant who came from poverty. This means the people they owe money to
will be cheated out of what is due them, while Veronica parties on a half
billion dollars. She has a $7 million dollar Palm Beach condo, a $17 million
dollar Long Island mansion and another mansion in Palm Beach. She says, “We were
wealthy, yes, but not opulent, never showy.” Having over $30 million dollars in
homes is not opulent or showy? The shame is that this money was legally
transferred to her and their lawyers made sure she was never a part of Atkins
Nutritionals. She now runs the “philanthropic” Atkins Foundation which is
supposedly dedicated to ending obesity and diabetes by advocating eating all the
meat, eggs, poultry, and dairy products you can stuff down your throat and then
swilling sucralose to follow it up. But don’t eat any of those awful whole
grains!
This is a true story folks. We met a couple name Tom and Carol on our last
cruise. Tom is dying of stomach cancer and has about six months to live. He had
90% of his stomach removed and half of his esophagus, so he can only eat very
small amounts of food. He is in constant pain, wears a time release fentanyl
(the strongest narcotic on earth) patch, takes large doses of morphine, and
carries around a bottle of high strength Oxycontin® for breakthrough pain. He
says the pain, “increases exponentially” and gets worse all the time. Tom is
only 44, by the way, and will never see his 45th birthday. Carol had a
hysterectomy last year and is on eight (!) different prescription drugs
including Prozac. She is now hopelessly diabetic. Carol is only 42. She’ll never
see 50.
We watched while Tom ate little bites of rib eye steak and little bites of
broccoli. Carol ate a 12 ounce rib eye and some salad with a creamy dressing.
All they eat is meat, more meat, poultry, eggs, dairy products, vegetables, and
sucralose sweetened desserts. About five years ago Tom and Carol read a book by
Robert Atkins and thought he was an absolute genius. Being Texans, the idea of
eating all the meat they wanted sounded just great. For the last five years they
have been eating all the steak, roast beef, cheeseburgers, pork loin, bacon,
eggs, hot dogs, milk, cheese, butter, cream, pork chops, fried chicken, sausage,
lamb chops, and other saturated fats their little fat clogged hearts desired.
Tom gave himself cancer and Carol gave herself diabetes with this ketogenic
insanity. They stopped eating all bread, rice, pasta, oatmeal, breakfast cereal
and other grains. They eat no fruit at all.
To their credit they stopped eating any hydrogenated fats and sugars. They
stopped eating pies, cakes, cookies, ice cream and desserts in general. However
they use sucralose regularly instead of sugar and buy Atkins “Indulgence” ice
cream sweetened with sucralose. (If you think this is a safe alternative to
sugar, please read “Splenda Is Not Splendid” in our free library). Tom said, “I
knew I was eating well because we were on the Atkins diet and ate nothing
but meat and vegetables. So I know my diet had nothing to do with getting
cancer.”
Atkins may be long gone, but his deadly legacy lives on.
